Spicy Steve's Places to Shop

I am always being asked where I shop in Greater Vancouver for the best selection of general food items, and in particular,  South East Asian ingredients.  The following is a list of some of my favourite spots to shop.

South East Asian - Thai, Malaysian, Singaporean, Vietnamese and Indonesian

Asia Market

265 East Hastings, Vancouver  (between Main and Gore)

This is my number one spot to go and the owner Vinh will be happy to help you if you are looking for a particular product.  They have a huge selection of curry pastes and other condiments plus dried noodles and my favourite Mae Ploy Brand coconut milk.  There is also a small refrigerated section which contains fresh Vietnamese and other South East Asian herbs such as Lao corriander, Thai basils, Asian mint, kaffir lime leaves, banana palms and sometimes curry leaves.  You can also get frozen banana leaves here.

If you live way out in Surrey, try Hen Long on 104th in Surrey.  They have a good selection there as well as fresh veggies and fruit.

T&T Asian Supermarkets (various locations) carry lots of general Asian grocery items although the emphasis is on Chinese items.

European Deli Meats and Salamis

Santa Barbara

1322 Commercial Drive, Vancouver, Tel: 604-253-1941

Incredibly cheap selection of deli meats and salamis but be prepared to take a number and line-up when you go in.  Some nice fruits outside on the street, especially during the summer when they bring in local Okanagan fruit. Behind the deli counter is a wall to wall selection of 1-3 litre bottles of Spanish, Greek and Italian Olive Oils at great prices and you can interrupt the queue to have one passed to you.  The already cheap prices get cheaper from the last Wednesday of each month until the following Sunday with Santa's Barbara's monthly deli sale.
